Unfortunately in most cases, when the 200-300 block of Rutherford Ave makes the news, it’s related to crime. A shooting here, domestic violence there, it’s all part of growing up on Ruff Avenue, but, not on July 16, 2011. On that day, people assembled on the battle scarred block, and the only commotion to be heard was the glorious sound of community pride and self-determination hard at work. It was a beautiful Saturday morning, residents, property owners, contractors, City Officials, other Civic leaders, local businesses, passersby and representatives from Home Depot, together participated in UnlitterUs-Rutherford Ave.
(NIA’s) Neighborhood Improvement Assoc.’s goal is to help restore beauty and a sense of pride to Rutherford Ave. Councilwoman at-Large Phyllis Holly Ward introduced UnlitterUs to Trenton. It was through the press conference in April, that Octavia Sutphin, President of the NIA learned of UnlitterUs.
NIA started with a community pride walk, assessing enhancements needed to improve the block’s curb appeal; after which, NIA went to work raising money, recruiting volunteers, buying supplies and coordinating the event.
9:00AM trucks unloaded supplies, by early afternoon the street was alive and hustling with volunteers, hammers banged, power tools roared and people were unified in the idea of helping their neighbors.
Volunteer contractors led teams that performed landscaping, painting, minor repairs and replacements. Others came out and supported the effort; as well as, Councilwoman Ward, and Mayor Tony Mack who also came to show his support.
Can’t forget the youth, who were engaged, learning from adults they never met until that day.
Two young people won the essay contest on, “How and why, to keep my community clean”.
NIA wants to thank everyone who made our event a success!
