For the second year in a row, we would like to invite you to help us in encouraging our young generation by attending the six-week YII (Youth Inclusion Initiative) summer program. This program is a partnership between Dept of Environmental Protection and NIA (Neighborhood Improvement Assoc.) running from July 8 to Aug 16, 2024. The participants will receive a stipend of $15.00 per hour, for a 40-hour week from 8:00AM - 4:00 PM.
This program is organized by NIA (Neighborhood Improvement Association) to support building a diverse, inclusive green workforce, providing exposure to environmental careers, professional developmental skills, and promoting access to career readiness.
The youth must be Trenton residents, attending high school or college, and between the ages of 16 to 20. The six-week program allows the youth to gain hands-on experience in areas such as air monitoring, water sampling and natural resource management, that will provide the opportunity to develop the necessary tools to pursue a career in environmental protection, conservation, and stewardship. The youth will learn from dynamic professionals, visit some of New Jersey's incredible natural areas, and contribute to the exciting work and protecting public health and the environment we share.
During the program the youth are introduced to various DEP program areas by participating in interactive activities and learning about opportunities for career advancement. Other opportunities may include touring facilities such as water treatment plants, taking part in fishing and wildlife education programs, conducting stream assessments, and learning about proper tools and equipment handling at a state park.
Our environment faces several problems, and many of these seem to be worsening with time, bringing us into a time of a true environmental crisis. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to raise awareness of the existence of these issues, as well as what can be done to reduce their negative impact.
Evaluation criteria: an in-person interview, (2) recommendation letters, a copy of the youth's report card or transcript, and the submission of a 500 to 1000-word essay, on one, two or all three bulleted topics below, their causes and effects on the environment, and solutions to correct the problem.
Isles Youth Institute at 33 Tucker Street will be the drop off and pick up spot and class room location. Although the YII Summer Program officially starts July 8th, we will be hosting an orientation & onboarding meet and greet to include team building, expectations, and complete needed forms etc. on Monday, July 1st @ 9:00AM.
Applications, essays and requested documents must be received by Friday, 6/7/2024 and should be emailed to: niaoftrentonnj@gmail,com with the subject line: YII Youth Inclusion Initiative Summer Program.
